Which Aircraft Can Legally Fly Aerobatics?

An aircraft may fly aerobatic manoeuvres if its certification category and its flight manual say so, and the difference is structural, not a matter of pilot confidence.

The three categories

CategoryTypical load limitsPermitted manoeuvres
Normalabout +3.8G / -1.5GNormal flight, turns up to 60 degrees of bank, stalls
Utilityabout +4.4G / -1.8GThe above plus spins and steeper turns, if the flight manual allows
AerobaticSet by the flight manual, typically well beyond utilityManoeuvres listed in the flight manual, including inverted flight

The exact figures belong to the individual type and to its Aircraft Flight Manual, and they depend on mass and configuration. The principle is what matters: the category is a certification fact with structural substantiation behind it.

Why a Cessna 172 is not an aerobatic aircraft

It is certified in the normal and utility categories. Its structure is substantiated for those load factors, its fuel system is designed for upright flight and its engine has a conventional oil system that will not deliver oil under negative load. Fly it inverted and the engine stops receiving oil, which is a problem long before anything structural is reached.

This is why "adrenaline flights" or "flights with manoeuvres" advertised in a normal-category aircraft are a different product from aerobatics. They may be enjoyable. They are steep turns and wingovers.

What makes an aerobatic aircraft different, physically

The two questions to ask before booking anything

  1. What is the aircraft type and registration? Both, not one. A registration lets you check the aircraft exists and is the one in the photographs.
  2. Does the pilot hold an aerobatic rating? In the European system that is FCL.800.

Both answers should come back immediately and specifically. Ask for clarification if either answer is missing. Ours are Extra 300L, registration SP-EKS, certified in the aerobatic category, Lycoming AEIO-540-L1B5 with an inverted oil system, emergency parachutes for both crew, flown by Maciej Kulaszewski, FI(A), FAI Intermediate World Champion 2022.

A note on gliders and warbirds

Plenty of gliders are cleared for aerobatics, and glider aerobatics is a discipline in its own right with its own competition categories. Historic aircraft vary widely and are usually flown to tighter restrictions than their original design allowed, for sensible preservation reasons. Neither is a substitute for a modern aerobatic monoplane if what you want is the full repertoire with negative G.

Frequently asked questions

Can any aeroplane fly aerobatics?

No. An aircraft may fly aerobatic manoeuvres only if it is certified in the aerobatic category and the specific manoeuvres are permitted by its Aircraft Flight Manual. Engine power is irrelevant to this.

Can a Cessna 172 do a loop?

It is not certified for aerobatic manoeuvres, its structure is substantiated for lower load factors, and its fuel and oil systems are designed for upright flight, so the engine would be starved of oil inverted.

What does AEIO mean in a Lycoming engine designation?

Aerobatic, fuel-injected, opposed, with an inverted oil system. It is the engine feature that allows continued running during inverted flight and negative-G manoeuvres.

How do I check whether a flight is aerobatic?

Ask for the aircraft type and registration, and ask whether the pilot holds an aerobatic rating. Both answers should be immediate and specific.

What load factors is an aerobatic aircraft cleared for?

It depends on the type, the mass and the configuration, and the limits are set out in that aircraft Flight Manual. What defines the category is that the structure is substantiated for high load in both directions.
