Piston vs Jet

Competition aerobatics places demands on roll control, energy management and the space available for a sequence. Maximum speed alone does not describe an aircraft’s suitability for that programme.

The box is small

A competition box is roughly 1,000 metres on a side, with a floor and a ceiling. A figure has to start and finish inside it. At jet speeds the radius of every manoeuvre grows, so a loop that fits comfortably in a piston aeroplane will not fit, and a pilot ends up spending the flight managing the walls rather than the geometry.

Roll rate

An Extra 300L rolls at around 400 degrees per second. Very few jets come close, because a jet is optimised for other things and its control surfaces are sized for a different flight regime. In a discipline where a large part of the score comes from roll quality and roll placement, that difference decides the outcome before anybody starts the engine.

Energy behaves differently

A piston aerobatic aircraft has a propeller producing thrust at zero airspeed, and that is what makes a hammerhead work: you can hang the aeroplane vertically, run out of energy in a controlled way and pivot. A jet has no equivalent low-speed authority and takes time to spool up, so the same figure is either impossible or has to be flown as something else.

Cost, and therefore repetition

Regular practice is part of aerobatic training, so operating costs affect the training plan. Fuel, maintenance, aircraft availability and instructor time all need to be included.

What jets are good at

Display flying to a large crowd, where the figures are big, the smoke is visible from a distance and the noise is part of the product. Formation display teams, where jets are unmatched. And speed as spectacle, which is its own thing and not what a judge is scoring.

What it means from the back seat

Our introductory flights use the two-seat Extra 300L SP-EKS. The pilot links figures within the chosen package and adapts them to the participant and conditions. We do not offer a jet flight as an equivalent package.

The piston aircraft, because the figures happen close enough together to feel continuous and the shape of each one stays visible. A faster aircraft spreads the same sequence across far more sky.
